Hell. Yeah.

Category: Farscape Alumni

What if the bad kids had a breakfast club?

Filming has begun on the movie version of the graphic novel, Bad Kids Go To Hell, and according to CinemaBlend.com, Ben Browder has joined the cast. (You can also read it here, on the Facebook page for Bad Kids Go To Hell.) The movie also will star one of the original Breakfast Club cast members, Judd Nelson.

So, what’s this story about?

From the Amazon.com blurb:

A construction crew unearths a primal, supernatural force when they break ground for a new, commemorative library for Crestview Academy, a prestigious Midwestern prep-school and home to the spoiled offspring of the city’s social elite. Three years later, six of Crestview’s richest (and hottest) students are brought together early one Saturday for detention inside the newly completed library. Bored, the kids talk about their school’s infamous “dark presence,” and goad one another into a half-hearted seance. However, the joke turns deadly when they rouse an angry spirit, and start to die, one-by-one, in horrible accidents! Yet, as the kids drop like flies, are the murders really the work of an evil phantom, or has one of these six spoiled brats secretly conspired to bring them all together for detention in order to “level” the social playing field and do away with the competition? The Breakfast Club meets The Grudge in this sexy, dark, comedy-thriller mini-series from scribe Matt Spradlin, co-creator of True Believer for the Sci-Fi Channel and visual effects coordinator for X-Men 2 and Beowulf, and hot new comic artist Anthony Vargas!

It looks like if you want the book, you’re SOL, as it has long since sold out — unless you have deep pockets and can afford the high price that any available remaining edition commands.

Let’s hope this movie not only will be well-made, and blessed by the casting gods (for the other non-Browder-acted characters, that is), and based on a sharp script, but that it will be more than just another cult film.

Life On Mars

Imaginative Farscape fans live in a nexus of the real, the surreal, and the hyper-real. Just about anything becomes grist for the concatenation mill. For example, the news that NASA’s Mars rover, Opportunity, which has roamed the surface of Mars since 2004, has reached the 30 Kilometer mark (18.5 miles, or about 3 metras), made this earthbound human ponder life on Mars.

Imagine spending the last 7 years roaming the surface of Mars.

“Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids

In fact it’s cold as hell

And there’s no one there to raise them if you did…

It’s a Game! It’s a Show! It’s a GameShow!

Category: Farscape Alumni

So, the Big Huge Thing that Rockne O’Bannon tweeted about last month is the conflagration of gaming and TV, with a multiplayer on-line shooter game tied together with a scripted live-action TV show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the game and show, called Defiance, “introduces players and Syfy viewers to a world ravaged by decades of conflict, where humans and aliens live together in a world the likes of which no one has seen. The game combines the frenetic action of a top-tier console shooter with the persistence, scale, and customization of an MMO, while its TV counterpart exudes the scope, story, and drama of a classic sci-fi epic. The game’s story will take place in the San Francisco bay area, while the TV series will be set just outside of St. Louis, MO. Because they exist in a single universe, the show and the game will influence and evolve each other over time, with actions in both mediums driving the overall story of Defiance.”

“It’s a groundbreaking coming together of a TV development team and a game development team to create the first truly immersive, 24/7 interactive story that bridges online gaming and the TV world in a unique way.”

                                                             – David Howe, president of SyFy

If this doesn’t drive the 18-to-24-male-demographic out of the woodwork, I don’t know what will.

Good luck, Rockne, with this exciting, new endeavor.

HUGE??!? How Huge IS It?

Category: Farscape Alumni

Zhaan thinks it's HUGEFrom Rockne, via Twitter:

“Great meeting at Syfy yesterday. New project. HUGE. New series. Very excited. Very, very excited.”

You can read more about it at airlockalpha.com, although you won’t find any additional details.

Color me cynical as SyFy seems only interested in dirt cheap programming.

He Who Laughs Last, eh?

Category: Farscape Alumni

Snubbed by Emmy and Saturn awards, David Elsey, the man who brought us all those delicious creatures in Farscape, wins an Oscar for his work in The Wolfman. Congratulations to Mr. Elsey on getting a long overdue recognition for his great work.

You can examine his work in more detail in the book Creatures Of Farscape by Joe Nazzaro. Or take a look at his work in Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith and Where The Wild Things Are.

(Although I think he ought to get a special “Iron Chef of Makeup” award for the speed and creativity shown in cranking out creatures for four seasons of Farscape. Just sayin’. )

Claudia Channels Zhaan?

Category: Farscape Alumni

In a couple weeks, Claudia Black gets a guest appearance on 90210 in an episode called “It’s Getting Hot In Here”.

That’s Claudia on the left, playing guru Sona. I can’t find her episode’s scheduled date but most people believe it’ll be on January 31st on your local CW affiliate.

Mahna Mahna

I couldn’t think of a better way to chase away the mid-winter blues than by visiting the Jim Henson’ Fantastic World exhibit at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, which runs for the entire month of January.

Both are fine institutions guaranteed to provide loads of family fun.

Check out this article for more fun things to do this winter in Chcago.
